GENESIS CLUB SELECTED AS CITIZENS BANK CHAMPION IN ACTION FOR MENTAL HEALTH

WORCESTER, MA, March 1, 2022— Genesis Club, a non profit community organization serving people recovering from serious mental illness in the Worcester region, yesterday announced that they were selected by Citizens Bank as the Champion in Action grant recipient for the state of Massachusetts in mental health support. The Champions in Action program supports non profit organizations that are addressing social challenges facing their communities. This award comes with an unrestricted gift of $35,000 to support the work of the Clubhouse.

To announce this award, Genesis Club hosted a virtual celebration, joined by Citizens Bank, NBC10 Boston, and Genesis Club supporters in the community. Those in attendance heard from members about how Genesis Club has helped them in their recovery and virtually toured the Career Development department in the Clubhouse. After weathering the worst of the pandemic, Genesis Club in-person operations are thriving for their 550 active clubhouse members including a new hybrid model to ensure virtual access to Clubhouse services. The Clubhouse has returned to a bustling “work-ordered day,” the typical business operations managed by members and staff working together. Members are filling the need for skilled employees in the workforce, and young adults are returning to education programs as the anxiety about another lockdown subsides.

“The Citizens Champions in Action award will allow us to expand our support for young adults who have been particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Lisa Brennan, Executive Director of Genesis Club. “Every member of Genesis Club is a champion in our eyes because they defy the odds every single day. Members of accredited Clubhouses like ours experience lower rates of hospitalization and social isolation, and much higher rates of employment.”

Lisa Murray, Massachusetts Citizens Bank President, commented, “Genesis Club is a true Champion in Action and their work is making an impact in this critical area. This grant will help them extend their reach and further their mission, which will benefit our community.”

Genesis Club, located at 274 Lincoln St. Worcester, MA, welcomes any person who has been diagnosed with a mental illness. Members work on their recovery in their own way and at their own pace by being part of a community of mutual support, contributing their skills to running the Clubhouse, and working with staff and peer advisors to set goals to help them regain their lives.
